Being armed with the facts is the best foundation for planning what comes next.

Why early diagnosis matters

Understanding what’s happening brings both clarity and control. A timely diagnosis can help you to:

We continue to recommend the NHS pathway for diagnosis. However, we also provide an alternative, complete diagnostic service that is often more direct, quicker, and easier to access. With your consent, we will share the outcome with your GP to ensure your care remains joined up.

Our dementia diagnosis pathway

Stage 1 - Exploring alternative explanations for cognitive decline

A healthcare professional will carry out preliminary tests, including:

  1. A screening memory test to clarify if there is cognitive slowing down
  2. A health-history review
  3. Blood tests

This allows our doctors to assess if there are potentially reversible causes of cognitive slowing such as depression or side effects of medication. This is essential before moving on to examine specifically for types of dementia. This may provide a clearer explanation for the concerns you have.

Stage 2 - Dementia assessment

A doctor or specialist nurse will carry out:

  1. A memory and cognitive functioning test
  2. An MRI or CT scan
  3. A review and consultation

At this stage the outcome of the test will clarify your health situation and we will share the outcome with you. With your consent, we’ll send a copy to your GP.

Stage 3 - Specialist referral (where required)

If needed, we will refer you to a neurologist or psychiatrist on our team for further tests. These may include advanced cognitive assessments and brain scans to look for changes in brain structure.

Stage 4 - Receiving a diagnosis

Once all the results have been reviewed, the doctor will confirm whether dementia is likely. Together with you and your family, they will discuss:

  • The diagnosis in clear terms.
  • The specific type of dementia, such as Alzheimer’s disease, Lewy body disease, or vascular dementia.
  • Treatment options and the next steps in your care.
